I always wondered why every time I go past Plaistow Road, Bromley, I get so nostalgic; perhaps because mum passed away in an old peoples' home along this road; the black shiny doors and sad large trees flicker against my windscrreen every time I pass by in my car. I now realise that Bowie's song 'Life on Mars ' would be the ideal song to play along this road, if you're ever in the vicinity !

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of this. Originally from Dudley (Worcs) and now washed up on Scotland's beautiful west coast I was at the free festical at Beckenham Rec in August '69 and remember it well. A magical day and the first time I saw my hero playing live. Living in Penge and working at an ad agency oppsite Beckenham Green I would often see Angie - with her mop of yellow hair - pushing a very young Zowie in his pushchair from my office window. My bank was LLoyds where I often saw Mick Ronson. Blissful days. The festival also featured "Gasworks" and "Chastity" and I remember my (barefoot) walk back to the station for the train to Penge East where I lived then. Years later in September '74 my late husband John and I were married at St. John the Evangelist, Penge, in the parish of Beckenham. Much water under many bridges since then and I have some lovely memories. Thank you for posting this - I have really enjoyed my trip down memory lane. :o) Sue

This is a excellent article on an excellent man! I love the pictures, especially David, Mum and Angie.
The other side to Hermione dumping David involved fidelity issues on his part, unsurprisingly. He said later that he loved her, but "I couldn't for the life of me keep it zipped." Cracks me up every time!

Great site, thanks for the education. I thought I knew something about Bowie/Jones, but this has enlightened me. Back in the mid eighties me and a bunch of guys from Nottingham and Sheffield hosted the David Bowie World Convention at the Hammersmith Novotel. At the event was Lindsay Kemp (Bowie's choreographer) who told me, before he made a pass at me, that he was Bowie's lover for 7 years (then my mate went off with Kemp to his villa in Spain, I had no idea my mate was that way inclined at the time!). Also at the event was Ken Pitt (Bowie's original manager) he was only interested in selling his book at the time and didn't chat much. The event turned out to be a scam and the guys from Sheffield took off with the receipts without paying me out, or some of the creditors. But I did learn a lot about one of my favorite performers of all time, it's a shame Bowie never showed up at the event but he didn't endorse it at all, and was right to boycott.

Anyway, thanks for a great site!
