Thank you Mr Anonymous. 'Poisoned' has been changed to 'Poisonous'. I promise it was a typo and that I didn't think the Italians used shells filled with poisoned mustard!

Having used the polaroid cameras typical of the 1950's, it struck me early in the story that there had to be a third person present.

After taking the image there is a fairly complex procedure requiring both hands that must be precisely timed with (typically) a wristwatch, and leaving some rather toxic gel-like chemicals to dispose of. It basically commands all your attention.

You also wouldn't want to risk the chemicals coming in contact with your mouth, skin, etc.

Re: " ... the Italian dictator, who had been in power since 1922, ordered the bombing and the use of poisoned mustard gas in the Italian invasion of Ethiopia. ..."

That should be poison (not poisoned) mustard gas, or perhaps simply mustard gas.
As written, it appears you are implying was made from "poisoned mustard".
Mustard gas, chemically (BIS(2-chloroethyl) sulfide), is a synthesized chemical blistering agent named "Mustard gas" for it's colour and aroma.

Very interesting read, though. Thanks.

Ha Ha, I can't seem to find any mention of their existence at all. I'm going to get the C4 documentary to see if they were featured in the programme. Perhaps someone can remember?

yes, fantastic blog. I look forward to your posts. In reading this particular post, I realized that I just love gossip when it is well aged. I complain about modern celebrity gossip, but for some reason I thoroughly enjoy reading about by gone scandals.
