Just watched a fascinating follow-up on this from Andrew Rose on Yesterday (UKTV Play) "The Prince, The Princess & The Perfect Murder" (also available as a book). Turns out 'The Prince' in the title is none other than the then Prince of Wales, the future Edward VIII.
Marshall Hall was able to take the line of (attack is the best form of) defence that he did because the judge directed that all that the jury would be allowed to know about Marguerite Meller was that she had been married once before and that she had a daughter, nothing about her years as a courtesan.
"How [could] the judge allow so much irrelevant evidence while denying so much ‘evidence in response’ from the prosecution?" asked Philip Lillingston (above). The plot-thickening discovery in Rose's later book, is that as well as having a gun that fired magic bullets, she'd very sensibly hung onto a considerable bundle of billets-doux from the Prince of Wales, souvenirs from the two years spent as his mistress in Paris during WW1. You can draw the dots yourself.

Contemporary cuttings completely rebut the assertions at the end of this piece regarding her attempt to inherit via a feigned pregnancy. The cuttings detail the complete opposite. Why not DO THE RESEARCH rather than recycle and rehash any old supposition. Numpty!

The fortune she wasn’t after, she was ordered to kill him because of his earlier discovery of king Tut’s tomb, and to silence him for ever, she may not knew that too, however for sure she was used . More over The judge knew and he was obligated to set her free as a national duty or maybe was threaten ! this is only one little piece of the greater good ?

A very enjoyable and informative read. I first heard about the case in "The Murderers' Who's Who" which happened to leave out everything about Marguerite's probable guilt. Unbelievable how the judge could allow so much irrelevant evidence while denying so much 'evidence in response' from the prosecution. I've always thought ALL evidence should be allowed in a trial and then let the jury sort out what is and is not relevant.
Well done.

Great retelling of one of the most notorious cases of the Twenties, beautifully evoked. Marshall Hall's stirringly dramatic defence was very different - but equally sucessful - to the approach of Sir Patrick Hastings KC in the Mrs. Barney Murder Case of around the same time.
