Is it possible to tell me how to obtain a password so I can read the article on Teddy Boys and Christmas Humphreys?

Fantastic job!

BTW, David Stone Martin is the artist used on the poster for "The Three Penny Opera." A protégé of Ben Shahn, DSM was very popular back then, copied by many. You can see his graphics on tons of record covers, ranging from Charlie Parker to Harry Belafonte, as well as magazine covers: Downbeat, Holiday, etc.

Sorry for being slow to comment on this particular piece, only just read it.
Love your site,I am not even a Londoner (I come from Edinburgh but often visit London)every time I read your stuff it is interesting.
I don't doubt any of what you say about the colour bar but I think the British government's attitudes were a bit behind much popular opinion on the race issue.
There is an interesting American training film made for US troops coming to Britian which explains slowly that most British people are not racist towards black people, likewise guide books for American servicemen explain that British people did not usually understand the colour bar in American society and armed forces.

Thank you very much for introducing me to Roland Hayes. For the bargain-minded, for next to nothing you can pick up a large collection of Hayes' work, The Art of Roland Hayes, at Amazon and elsewhere. What a fine, compelling voice!

Very interesting story, thank you.

I have just returned to your site after about 6 months (the last I read was the Miss World story) and it is very nice to see you blogging again (there seemed to be quite a long time between blogs then).

Would you be able to find out anything to bog about Ealing 'Queen of the Suburbs'? Such a beautiful place MUST have some underlying stories!

Thank you once again
