A most enjoyable site. I would like to reproduce some of the photos for a centenary tribute exhibition being staged at Fairlynch Museum in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, in honour of Reg Varney (1916-2008). I hope that is ok with you. Reg retired to Budleigh and is remembered by many here.

As a young American kid growing up in New York during the early 80′s hearing that familiar Thames opening jingle would sent me rushing down the stairs to watch. He was and still is one of my favorites, a true comic genius.

This blog had all the smells, the dampness and the desperation to convince me I was actually there auditioning and being rejected…probably. A brilliant upsum of an enigmatic man and a great era. Yet at the end I still felt I didn’t know Benny Hill because I think no-one ever did.

As you mention, my father Harry got his first professional showbusiness gig at the Windmill in February 1946. He sent a telegram to his mother in Swansea after his first show: ‘Audience with me all the way – managed to shake them off at the station’. He also had a story about chatting to Max Bygraves at an audition, where Max commented philosophically ‘If this lark doesn’t work out I can always go back to my tools. I’m a carpenter’. This prompted Harry to wonder what he was going to do, as he had no other trade.
