I know thw (ex) policeman who was called to his flat when they realised he was dead - he said that apart from the smell, from the back he looked just like, well, Benny Hill sitting in front of the tv. He said with typical black humour that it was still hard to resist going ovver to him and slapping him rapidly on the head a la Bob Todd...

I've been visiting this site for years but never commented before, so just to say that its by far one of the best and dont ever stop !

Reply to Raye Du-Val re 'Act 1 Scene 1' coffee house/restaurant in Old Compton Street, I remember it well, I worked there as a waitress in 1960/61. It was a good place to work, all the girls from the Raymond Revue show used to come in, and actors and actresses from the nearby theatres used to be regular customers, I remember Cliff Richards came in, and Vince Eager, and lots of other well known show biz people.
Soho was so much better fun then. We used to go to the Amalfi for coffee or pizza.

In his book "Star Turns: The Life and Times of Benny Hill and Frankie Howerd", Barry Took suggests that Benny Hills' regular visits to Bangkok and Hamburg might have been for more than just, er, script material research.

What a heartbreaking end of such magnificent singer, performer.

But how kind of the celebrity-world to show their shallow faces at the funeral, I hope they enjoyed the publicity.

As I strolled near Hilldrop Crescent the other day I noticed that the old folks' home nearby is called 'Elmore House'. Someone has a rather macabre sense of humour!

One thing that really surprised me about Benny Hill was how, when I saw a clip of him speaking to a group of of fans in Germany, he spoke fluent German.

How and when had he taught himself? Amazing.
